FAQ

Accounts, passwords, mirrors, checking, requests and reporting problems.

The questions below cover almost everything the contact queue receives. If yours is not here, the contact page reaches a person.

Do I need an account?

No. There is nothing to register for and no login anywhere on this site. Every entry is reachable from the library, and no page will ever ask you to create anything before showing you a download.

Are there archive passwords?

No, and there never have been. Not on any entry, not on any mirror. If something claiming to come from this library asks for a password, it did not come from here.

Why is the library so small?

Because every entry is tested and written by hand rather than scraped. That caps growth at a few entries a week. The trade is that the version on the page is the version you get, and the mirrors are ones that were working when the checker last ran.

How often is everything checked?

Mirrors are pulled on a rolling schedule, so every entry is verified regularly rather than all at once. Two consecutive failures pull a mirror from rotation automatically. The index itself was last rebuilt a few hours ago and that timestamp appears in the footer.

Why does my security software flag some downloads?

Certain categories, particularly system and licence utilities, are flagged by behavioural heuristics as a class rather than because of anything specific in the file. Entries where this is expected say so in their installation notes. Use your own judgement, and if you would rather not, skip those entries.

A download is slow. What can I do?

Try a different mirror first, since speed varies enormously by route and time of day. A download manager that segments transfers helps considerably on large archives, and there is one listed in the library. If all four mirrors are slow for you, say so on the contact page with your rough location and it gets looked at.

The version on the page does not match what I installed.

That is a real problem and worth reporting. Include the entry title and both version strings, the one on the page and the one you actually got. Reports like this go to the front because they are quick to reproduce.

Can I ask for older versions?

Yes. Use the requests page and say which build and why. Older versions are a common request when a plugin or an add in broke in a newer release, and they are treated the same as any other request.

Do you take advertising?

Nothing on this site is placed by an advertiser, and nothing that looks like a download control is anything other than a download control. Mirror funding is covered by the people running it.

How do I report a copyright issue?

Through the DMCA page, which sets out what a notice needs to contain and where to send it. Notices sent through the contact form get redirected there, which just costs everyone a day.

Will you add a request tracker or a forum?

No. Both would need accounts, and the site does not have accounts. The requests queue and the contact queue cover what those would be used for.
