Overview
Character Animator takes a layered artwork file and turns it into a puppet you perform rather than keyframe. A webcam tracks your head position, eye direction, eyebrows and mouth shapes, a microphone drives lip sync against a phoneme set, the keyboard triggers poses and gestures, and the result records in real time. What used to take a day of frame by frame animation takes as long as the performance does.
Rigging is done by layer naming convention, which sounds fragile and is in practice the most approachable rigging system in any animation package. Name the artwork layers for the parts they represent, import the file, and the puppet is rigged with a head, eyes, mouth shapes, arms and body already connected. From there the behaviour list adds physics, walking, dangling limbs, breathing and eye blinking without a single manual keyframe.
The behaviour system is where the depth is. Each behaviour exposes parameters, they stack on any part of the hierarchy, and custom behaviours can be built from the standard set. Triggers map keyboard keys or MIDI input to swapped artwork, so a hand pose, a prop or an entire outfit changes on a keypress during a take, with latch and cycle options for holding or stepping through a set.
Recording works in takes on a timeline, layered by parameter, so a face performance, an arm performance and a set of triggers can each be recorded in separate passes and blended together. The timeline then behaves like an ordinary editing surface for trimming and rearranging, and the result exports directly or moves into a compositing and editing pipeline through the usual dynamic link and native format routes.
Key Features
- Live performance capture from webcam for head, eyes, eyebrows and mouth shapes
- Microphone driven lip sync against a phoneme set with manual correction
- Rigging by layer naming convention directly from a layered artwork file
- Behaviour library covering physics, walk cycles, dangle, breathing and blinking
- Trigger system mapping keys or MIDI input to swapped artwork and poses
- Take based recording layered per parameter for separate performance passes
- Timeline editing of recorded takes with trimming, blending and rearranging
- Scene management with multiple puppets, backgrounds and camera moves
- Live output for streaming a performed character in real time
- Native round trip into the wider editing and compositing applications
What Changed in This Build
- Face tracking improved in low light and with partial occlusion
- Lip sync phoneme detection more accurate on fast speech
- Faster scene load on puppets with very deep layer hierarchies
- Trigger panel reorganised with search across large trigger sets

Installation Notes
- Light your face evenly before calibrating the camera. Tracking quality is set almost entirely by lighting rather than by camera price.
- Name your artwork layers to the convention before importing. Renaming afterwards means rebuilding parts of the rig.
- Record the face pass and the trigger pass separately. Performing everything at once is possible and almost never produces the better take.
Before You Start
Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.
There is no archive password on this or any other entry in the library. If something you downloaded elsewhere claims to come from here and asks for one, it did not come from here. Nothing on this site is behind a survey, a shortener or a countdown either.
If the entry does not match what the page describes, say so on the contact page and include the version string from the release details table. Reports naming a specific version get checked first because the checker can reproduce them straight away.
Frequently Asked
No. The puppet is performed rather than keyframed, which is why it appeals to people who could not animate frame by frame.
Layered artwork from the raster and vector applications, rigged automatically when the layers follow the naming convention.
Yes. There is a live output path for performing a character into a stream or a call in real time.
