Overview

Adobe Photoshop 2026 is the twenty-seventh generation of the raster editor that most retouchers, matte painters and product photographers still measure every other tool against. The 2026 line keeps the entire classic surface intact, layers, masks, channels, smart objects, adjustment stacks, camera raw as a filter, and then layers a generative pipeline on top of it that runs as ordinary layer content rather than as a separate mode you have to leave the document to reach.

The headline change this cycle is model routing. Generative Fill, Generative Expand and the new Reference Compose panel can be pointed at more than one backing model, and the release ships with Flux Kontext Pro for instruction style edits that hold composition across a prompt, and Gemini Nano Banana for fast local-feeling character and product consistency passes. Each generation lands as a live layer with its own mask, so a bad result is a discarded layer rather than a lost hour.

Everything else in the build is the ordinary professional payload: 16 and 32 bit per channel documents, CMYK and duotone output, colour managed soft proofing, smart object round trips into Camera Raw and Illustrator, artboards, video timelines for frame animation, scripting through ActionScript style batch actions, and a plugin surface that accepts the usual third party panels. Neural Filters, Content Aware Fill and Sky Replacement are all present and have been retuned for the new model backend.

Performance work this year focused on the tile cache and on GPU compositing. Documents over 2 GB open measurably faster, brush lag on 8K canvases with dozens of live smart filters is reduced, and the Select Subject and Object Selection tools now run their segmentation pass on the GPU where one is available, which takes a full-frame subject cut from seconds down to something close to instant on a modern card.

Installation Notes

• Close any previously installed version before running the installer. Two Photoshop generations can share a machine, but not a running session.
• If you keep a plugin folder from an earlier release, point the new install at it during setup rather than copying files over afterwards.
• Generative features will fall back to the local model path when the routed model is unreachable, so the panel never blocks the canvas.

Before You Start

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.
