Overview

This is the streamlined Lightroom rather than the catalog based Classic application, and the distinction matters. Where Classic is built around folders on your own disks and a catalog file you manage yourself, this version keeps a single unified library that is available on every device you sign the application into, with the desktop, tablet and phone versions all editing the same images.

The interface is deliberately simpler. One window, one set of editing panels down the side, no modules to switch between and no import dialog with a dozen decisions in it. Photographs are added, they appear in the library, and editing begins immediately. For photographers who found Classic's structure heavier than their workflow needed, this removes most of the overhead without removing the actual processing power.

The engine underneath is the same raw processor. Exposure, contrast, highlights and shadows, tone curve, colour mixing and HSL, colour grading across shadows, midtones and highlights, texture, clarity, dehaze, detail and noise reduction including the AI denoise pass, lens and profile corrections, geometry and perspective, healing, and the full masking system with subject, sky, background, object and person selection combined by intersect and subtract.

Organisation is handled by search rather than by folder discipline. Automatic subject and scene recognition means an image can be found by typing what is in it, alongside albums, ratings, flags, keywords and metadata filters. Editing is non destructive throughout, presets and profiles apply in bulk, versions keep several treatments of a frame, and export presets push finished files at whatever size and colour space the destination requires.

Installation Notes

• Decide between this and the catalog based Classic application before you start, since moving a large library between them later is tedious.
• Set the local cache size and location to a fast drive with room, because the default is conservative and slows browsing on large collections.
• Denoise is far quicker with a discrete graphics card. Without one, run it as a batch rather than image by image.

Before You Start

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.
