Overview

Media Encoder is the piece of the video pipeline nobody talks about and everybody depends on. It takes the render queue off the editing application so the editor keeps working while a delivery encodes, it handles ingest transcoding on the way in, and it runs the watch folders that turn a shared drive into an automated conversion service.

The queue takes sequences from the editor, compositions from the compositor, and standalone media files, then encodes each to as many outputs as you need in one pass. A single source can produce a broadcast master, a review copy, a social crop and an audio stem simultaneously, each with its own preset, destination and naming rule.

Presets cover the delivery landscape, and the preset browser lets you build, group and share your own. Format support spans H.264, HEVC, ProRes, DNxHD and HR, AS-11 and other broadcast wrappers, image sequences, animated formats and audio only output. Hardware encode and decode on supported Intel, NVIDIA and AMD hardware cuts long encodes to a fraction of the software time.

Beyond straight encoding it does real media processing: proxy generation for the editor, LUT and loudness normalisation applied during encode, closed caption embedding and sidecar export, cropping, scaling, frame rate conversion and time interpolation, plus a stitch mode for joining a folder of clips into one file without opening an editor at all.

Installation Notes

• Install it after the editing applications so the queue handoff registers with them correctly.
• Point watch folder output at a different drive from the input to avoid a folder encoding its own results.
• Enable hardware encoding unless you see artefacts on a specific format, in which case fall back to software for that preset.
