Overview

Screen recording splits into two kinds of tool: the streaming oriented studio with scenes and sources, and the small utility that captures a region and hands you a file. This is firmly the second, and it is better for the work most people actually need, which is a training clip, a bug reproduction, a lecture or a call recording that has to exist as a file in the next ten minutes.

Capture is set up by dragging a frame over the area you want, or by picking a window, a monitor or a preset resolution. Webcam overlay sits in a resizable corner, system audio and microphone are captured on separate tracks so one can be adjusted without the other, and mouse cursor highlighting, click effects and keystroke display can be enabled for anything instructional.

During recording you can draw on the screen. Arrows, boxes, freehand strokes and text annotations are laid over the capture live, which is far quicker than adding callouts afterwards, and a countdown, a recording timer and a duration limit keep an unattended capture from running away. The scheduler starts and stops a recording at a set time for anything that happens without you sitting there.

Afterwards there is a light editor rather than a full timeline: trim the ends, cut segments out of the middle, join several captures, adjust the audio levels, and export. Presets cover the common delivery targets and hardware encoders are used where available, so a long capture writes out in a fraction of real time rather than tying the machine up.

Installation Notes

• Record to a drive other than the system disk for long captures, sustained writes on a busy system drive can drop frames.
• Test microphone and system audio levels with a short capture before recording anything you cannot repeat.
• Set the frame rate to match what you are capturing, 60 frames per second on a slide deck only costs disk space.
