Overview

Pinnacle Studio Ultimate sits at the top of a product line that has been on Windows longer than most of its competitors, and the Ultimate tier is the one with everything switched on. The timeline supports as many tracks as a project needs, the colour and masking tools are genuinely capable, and the bundled plugin packs cover the effects most people would otherwise buy separately.

The editing surface is a conventional three panel layout: library, preview and timeline. Clips trim on the timeline or in a source window, tracks can be locked, muted and grouped, and the whole timeline supports nested projects so a complex sequence can be built once and dropped into a longer edit as a single object. Keyframing is available on effect parameters as well as transform properties, which is what separates this tier from the entry level one.

The assisted tools cover the work most people find tedious. Motion tracking attaches text, graphics or a blur to a moving subject across a shot. Masking supports shape and painted masks with keyframing, so a correction can be limited to part of the frame. Video masking, chroma key with spill suppression, and a stabiliser for handheld footage handle the usual cleanup. Multi camera editing synchronises up to six angles by audio waveform and cuts between them live.

The screen recorder is a genuine part of the package rather than an afterthought. It captures a display, a window or a region with system audio and microphone, records webcam alongside for a picture in picture layer, and drops the result straight into the timeline as separate tracks so the recording and the commentary can be cut independently. For tutorials and course material that combination removes an entire step from the workflow.

Installation Notes

• Install the bundled content packs during setup, adding them afterwards takes longer than taking them in one pass.
• Set the project format to match your source footage before importing so clips are not conformed on the way in.
• Point the render cache at a fast drive with headroom, timeline responsiveness depends on it more than on anything else.
