Overview
Nuke is the compositor most feature and episodic visual effects work passes through, and the reason is the node graph. Where a layer based compositor forces a linear stack, a node tree makes the flow of every image explicit, branches cheaply, and lets a script be read by someone who did not build it. On a shot with a hundred elements, that readability is not a nicety, it is the difference between a script that can be handed over and one that cannot.
The core toolset covers the whole compositing problem: keying with multiple algorithms for different plate conditions, roto and roto paint with tracked splines and open splines, planar and point tracking, camera tracking, lens distortion solve and reapply, colour correction across a full linear pipeline, deep image compositing that resolves holdouts by depth rather than by matte, and a 3D system with geometry, cameras, lights and a scanline and ray traced renderer.
This package covers all three tiers. Nuke is the base compositor, NukeX adds the camera tracker, the furnace toolset for motion estimation, denoise, lens distortion and the model builder, and Nuke Studio adds the timeline: conform against an edit, multi shot management, review with annotations, and export templates that push shots out to artists and pull the finished versions back into the cut.
Everything is scriptable. The Python interface reaches every node and every knob, gizmos package a node group into a reusable tool, expressions link knobs across the tree, and the whole thing integrates with the pipeline software a facility already runs. For a small studio the practical value is that the same application handles the shot work, the conform and the review session, without an export between any of them.

Installation Notes
- Work from image sequences on fast local storage. A network share will bottleneck the viewer long before the processor does.
- Set the colour management configuration before starting a project. Changing it later reinterprets every read node in the script.
- Keep gizmos in a shared plugin path rather than embedding them, otherwise a script opened elsewhere arrives with missing nodes.

Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.
