Overview

Vegas Pro has always done timelines differently, and the people who use it use it for exactly that reason. Events sit freely on tracks rather than being constrained to a rigid track type, crossfades are made by dragging one event over another, and almost every operation has a single key behind it. Editors who learned it can cut faster than in anything else, which is why it survived several ownership changes and never lost its base.

Every event carries its own fade curves, velocity envelope, pan and crop, and every track carries composite modes, motion, parent child relationships and automation envelopes. Nested timelines let a sequence become an event inside another, and the same free form model applies to audio, which is unusual for an editor that came out of an audio company and never gave up that heritage.

The audio side remains genuinely strong. Full multitrack recording, per event and per track effect chains, a real mixing console with busses and assignable effects, and the restoration processing that most editors expect you to leave for a separate application. For a documentary cut with problematic production sound, that means fewer round trips out to a repair tool.

The current release focuses on speed and assisted tools. Hardware accelerated decode and encode covers the current Intel, NVIDIA and AMD hardware, proxy handling is automatic on formats that need it, and the assisted set covers scene detection, speech to text captions, smart masking that tracks a subject across frames, colour matching between shots and a stabiliser that handles rolling shutter properly.

Installation Notes

• Set the project properties from a source clip before cutting so the timeline matches your footage rather than a default.
• Enable automatic proxy generation if you work with long GOP camera formats, playback is transformed by it.
• Keep the render cache off the same drive as your media when working at high resolution.
