Overview

vMix turns an ordinary computer into a live production switcher. Cameras, capture cards, network streams, screen captures, still images, video files, audio devices and browser sources all become inputs, and the preview and program monitors work exactly like the hardware switcher they replace, with transitions, overlays, keys and a cut bus driven from the keyboard or a control surface.

The Pro tier removes the input ceiling and unlocks the whole feature set. Unlimited inputs, four simultaneous overlay channels, eight instant replay channels with slow motion and multi angle review, unlimited call inputs for remote guests, and full multi camera production of an event that would otherwise need a rack of dedicated hardware to run.

Graphics and keying carry the production value. Chroma key with spill suppression and edge control, virtual sets with a moving camera in a three dimensional environment, title templates with live editable fields, scoreboards and timers, lower thirds triggered from a list, and a data source system that reads a spreadsheet or a feed so a graphic updates without anyone retyping it during the show.

Output goes several places at once. Record locally at full quality while streaming to multiple destinations at different bitrates, send a clean feed out over the network to another machine, drive a second display as a program output for a venue projector, and take an isolated recording of each camera separately for editing afterwards. Audio runs through a full mixer with per input control, buses, delay compensation and a compressor and gate chain.

Installation Notes

• Record to a drive that is not your system disk. A dropped frame during a live show is almost always a storage bottleneck.
• Test the full input set at production resolution before the event. A machine that handles four inputs comfortably may not handle eight.
• Set stream and record settings separately. Recording at full quality while streaming lower is the whole point of having both.

Before You Start

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.
