Overview

Most conversion problems are not interesting. A file is in the wrong container, it is too large for an upload limit, it has the wrong frame rate for a timeline, or a device refuses the codec. Solving those with a command line tool is entirely possible and entirely tedious. This application exists to make each of them a three click operation with a preset that already knows the correct answer.

Conversion is the core and it is broad. Effectively every common input container and codec is read, and output covers the standard delivery formats along with device targeted presets that carry the correct resolution, bitrate and profile for a given class of hardware. Hardware acceleration is used where available on Intel, NVIDIA and AMD, which turns a long batch from an afternoon into a coffee break. Batch mode applies one setting across a folder full of files.

The compressor is a separate mode because it addresses a different question: not what format, but what size. Set a target size or quality level, preview a short section at the resulting settings before committing, and the encoder works backwards to the bitrate that reaches it. For anyone dealing with upload limits or mail attachment ceilings this is the mode that gets used weekly.

Around those two sit the practical extras. A trimmer and merger for cutting and joining without a full re encode where the format allows it. Subtitle handling for adding, extracting or burning in. An audio extractor and a simple recorder for screen and webcam capture. Disc authoring with menu templates for the occasions that still call for it. Installation Notes

• Enable hardware acceleration for speed, and fall back to software encoding if a specific file shows artefacts.
• Use the compression preview before running a long file. Target size and acceptable quality do not always agree.
• Trimming with stream copy is instant, trimming with a re encode is not. Check which mode a format allows before starting a batch.

Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.
