Overview

Acrobat Reader is the application that defines what a PDF is supposed to look like. Browsers and lightweight viewers handle simple documents perfectly well, but the moment a file carries layers, transparency groups, embedded subsetted fonts, spot colours, XFA forms, digital signatures or attachments, the reader written by the people who wrote the format is the one that renders it as intended.

Reading is more configurable than people expect. Single page, continuous, two page and two page with cover layouts, a reading mode that hides every panel, a night mode that inverts the page without inverting the images, text reflow for reading a print layout on a narrow screen, zoom to text width, bookmarks, thumbnails, article threads and a search that covers attachments and an entire folder of documents rather than just the open file.

Annotation and review are fully supported here rather than being reserved for the paid tier. Highlight, underline, strikethrough, sticky notes, freehand drawing, text boxes, callouts, stamps and measurement tools all work, comments can be replied to and resolved in a thread, and the whole comment set can be exported, imported and summarised so a marked up document can be handed back to whoever produced it.

Form filling covers both ordinary interactive forms and flat scanned documents, where the fill and sign tools let you type into a page that has no fields at all and add a drawn or typed signature. Printing is handled properly with booklet and poster layouts, scaling control, comment printing and separation aware output, and the protected view sandbox opens untrusted documents in an isolated mode by default.

Installation Notes

• Set it as the default PDF handler in Windows settings after installing, rather than accepting whatever the browser offers to do.
• Do not install this alongside the Pro edition. Pro already includes every reading feature and having both causes file association conflicts.
• Leave protected view enabled unless a specific trusted document refuses to render, then add that source as an exception rather than turning the sandbox off.

Before You Start

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.
