Adobe Camera Raw

Overview

Camera Raw is not really an application, it is the engine. Every Adobe photography tool that opens a raw file is running this code, and the plugin exists so the raw dialog appears when you open a file from the raster editor or a browser, and so the same processing can be applied as a filter to a layer that is not raw at all.

The processing chain is the current generation. Profile selection comes first with camera matching and creative profiles, then exposure, contrast, the tone controls split across highlights, shadows, whites and blacks, texture, clarity and dehaze, a full colour mixer with hue, saturation and luminance per band, colour grading across three tonal ranges, and calibration for anyone who wants to shift the underlying primaries.

Masking is the part that changed the tool most in recent years. Selections can be made by subject, sky, background, object, and by person down to individual facial features, skin, hair and clothing, then combined with intersect and subtract against gradients, radial shapes and brushed areas. Each mask carries the full set of adjustments, so a local correction is as capable as a global one.

Correction and repair round it out. Lens profiles remove distortion, vignetting and chromatic aberration automatically for a large body of camera and lens combinations, transform straightens converging verticals with guided or automatic modes, healing removes sensor dust and unwanted detail with content awareness, and denoise runs a machine learning pass that produces an enhanced raw file rather than smearing detail away.

Installation Notes

• Install after your host application so the plugin registers into the correct folder.
• Denoise writes a new enhanced raw file rather than editing in place, so plan for the extra disk space on a large batch.
• Keep settings as sidecar files if you move images between machines, otherwise edits stay behind in the local database.

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.
