Overview

InDesign is where multi page documents get made. Books, magazines, catalogues, reports, manuals and anything else where the same layout logic has to repeat across dozens or hundreds of pages while remaining editable to the last minute before it goes to press.

The structural tools are the point. Parent pages carry the grid, running heads and folios, and every page built on them inherits and updates. Paragraph and character styles cascade, with nested and GREP styles handling patterns automatically. Object styles do the same for frames. Table and cell styles make a hundred page specification document maintainable. Text flows through threaded frames across pages and columns, with keep options, baseline grids and optical margin alignment.

Long document features go further than most people ever use: books that join separate files with synchronised styles and continuous numbering, tables of contents generated from paragraph styles, indexes with cross references, conditional text for producing variants of the same document, and data merge for personalised runs from a spreadsheet.

Output covers both directions. Print production runs through preflight profiles, separations preview, transparency flattening, ink limits, bleed and slug, and PDF export against the standard press presets. Digital output produces reflowable and fixed layout EPUB, tagged accessible PDF with reading order control, and HTML export for content reuse.

Installation Notes

• Package your document before sending it to a printer, it collects fonts, links and a report in one folder.
• Set up parent pages and styles before you start pouring text, retrofitting a hundred page document is painful.
• Keep linked images rather than embedding them, the file stays manageable and updates propagate.
