Overview

Deep Glow exists because the glow effect bundled with most compositors is a blur composited back over the source, and it shows. Bright areas bloom evenly regardless of how bright they actually are, the falloff has a hard shoulder, and colour shifts in the wrong direction as the radius grows. Deep Glow models the behaviour instead, working in linear light so that a highlight ten times brighter than white blooms ten times harder, exactly as it would through glass.

The second version rebuilds the core for speed and adds a proper colour space aware pipeline. Input can be interpreted as sRGB, Rec 709, linear or a log encoding, and the glow is computed in linear regardless, then returned to the working space. That single detail is what stops a glow from washing out saturated colour, and it is why the plugin has become standard in motion graphics work where brand colour has to survive the effect.

The control set stays small on purpose. Radius, exposure and threshold do most of the work, with chromatic aberration, colour remapping through a gradient, a bloom quality control and compositing modes for adding, screening or replacing. Everything animates on the usual keyframe surface, and every parameter is exposed to expressions so a glow can be driven by audio amplitude, a slider control or a layer's own brightness.

Performance was the main complaint about the first release and it is the main improvement here. The GPU path handles the multi octave blur pyramid in a single pass, which makes full frame glows on 4K comps interactive rather than something you set and then wait to preview. There is a CPU fallback for machines without a supported card, and render farm nodes without displays are handled correctly.

Installation Notes

  • Install the host application first so the installer can find the correct plugin folder.
  • Set the input colour space explicitly on the effect rather than relying on the project default, mismatches are the usual cause of a washed out result.
  • On a render farm, copy the plugin to each node rather than pointing nodes at a shared network folder.
