Overview

A private network client does two useful things. It encrypts everything leaving the machine so whoever runs the network you are on, a hotel, an airport, a café or a shared office, sees only that traffic is happening rather than what it contains. And it presents the connection as coming from somewhere else, which matters when a service behaves differently depending on where it thinks you are.

The server list spans a broad set of countries with multiple locations in the larger ones, and the client shows load and latency per server so the choice is informed rather than a guess. A fastest server option picks automatically by measured latency, favourites keep the locations you use regularly at the top, and specialised server groups cover streaming, peer to peer traffic and double routed connections for anyone who wants an extra hop.

The protection features are the part worth configuring properly. The kill switch blocks all traffic if the tunnel drops, so nothing leaks out on the ordinary connection during a reconnect, and it can be set to apply to the whole system or to selected applications. Leak protection covers name resolution and address requests, and split tunnelling decides per application whether it goes through the tunnel or straight out, which keeps a local printer or a banking site working normally while everything else is routed.

Protocol choice covers the modern lightweight option for speed and the established one for compatibility on restrictive networks, with an automatic mode that falls back when a protocol is blocked. Installation Notes

• Turn the kill switch on before you rely on the tunnel for anything, otherwise a dropped connection quietly falls back to the ordinary route.
• Add local devices such as printers and network storage to the split tunnelling exclusions, or they become unreachable while connected.
• If a network blocks the connection entirely, switch protocol manually rather than assuming the service is down.

Before You Start

Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.
