Overview

AnyDesk built its reputation on one thing, which is that the remote screen actually feels live. The video codec at the centre of it was written for desktop content rather than film, so text stays sharp, cursor movement tracks without the rubber banding that older remote tools produced, and a session over a mediocre connection remains usable rather than becoming a slideshow. On a local network the difference between the remote desktop and the local one is close to invisible.

The application is a single small executable that runs without installation. That matters for support work, because the person you are helping does not need administrator rights, does not need to sit through a setup wizard, and does not need to find anything afterwards. They run the file, read out the address it shows, and you connect. If the machine is one you will return to, the same executable installs itself properly and registers as a service so it can be reached before anyone logs in.

Sessions carry more than a picture. File transfer works both through a two panel browser and through ordinary copy and paste between the two machines, the remote clipboard is shared, remote printing sends a document on the far machine to a printer on yours, and audio is forwarded so a video or a call on the remote side is audible locally. Multiple monitors on the remote machine can be viewed individually or tiled.

The access control side is what makes it viable for unattended machines. Per device permission profiles decide what an incoming session may do, whether it can transfer files, control input, hear audio, lock the remote screen or restart the machine. An address book keeps the machines you manage with notes and tags, connections can be limited to a whitelist, and a session log records who connected to what and for how long.

Installation Notes

• Install as a service on machines you intend to reach unattended, otherwise the session ends when the user logs out.
• Set a permission profile before enabling unattended access rather than leaving the default in place.
• If a session looks soft on a high resolution display, switch the quality setting from balanced to original in the display menu.

Before You Start

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.
