Overview

Partitioning is one of those tasks that is trivial right up until it is catastrophic, and the built in disk management tool has always sat awkwardly between the two by refusing most of the operations people actually need. This fills that gap. Resizing a system partition without reinstalling, moving a partition to reclaim unallocated space stranded at the wrong end of a disk, merging two partitions without losing what is on either, all of these are ordinary operations here.

The operation list is broad. Partitions can be created, deleted, resized, moved, merged, split, formatted, hidden, checked and wiped. File systems can be converted between the common types without formatting, and a disk can be converted between the two partition table styles in place, which is the operation people usually need when moving an older install onto firmware that expects the newer style. Allocation unit size can be changed without a rebuild.

Cloning is the other half of the application and the reason it gets installed most often. A whole disk or a single partition can be copied to another drive, with the option to resize partitions to fit a target of a different size, which is exactly what migrating from a spinning disk to a smaller solid state drive requires. The system migration mode copies only what is needed to boot, aligns the result for solid state drives, and fixes the boot configuration so the clone actually starts rather than producing a repair loop.

Some work cannot be done on a running system, so the package builds a bootable environment onto a USB stick from inside the application. Booting into it gives the same interface with nothing locked, which is how a system partition gets restructured, a boot problem gets repaired, or a lost partition gets recovered. All editions are unlocked in this build, which means the server capable operations and the unlimited machine coverage are available rather than gated.

Installation Notes

• Back up anything you cannot lose before restructuring a disk. Partition operations are safe until a power cut says otherwise.
• Build the bootable stick before you need it, not while the machine is refusing to start.
• Let queued operations complete without interruption. Some run before the system loads and must not be stopped part way.
