Overview

Premium Security is the top tier of the Avast line, which means it is the version with the firewall, the ransomware shield, the sandbox and the web and mail filtering rather than the file scanner alone. The engine underneath is the same one the free product uses, so the difference is entirely in how many layers sit in front of it and how much of the machine they cover.

Detection runs on several passes rather than one. Signature matching handles known threats cheaply, behavioural analysis watches what a running process actually does with the file system, the registry and the network, and anything unrecognised can be run in a hardened sandbox where it can be observed without touching the real system. Scans can be scheduled, run on demand against a folder, or run from boot before the operating system fully starts, which is how deeply embedded infections are removed.

The ransomware shield is the layer most people install this tier for. Rather than trying to recognise every variant, it protects nominated folders and only allows applications you have approved to modify files inside them. An unknown process attempting to rewrite a documents folder is stopped and reported rather than detected after the damage. Sensitive data protection extends the same idea to documents containing personal information.

The network side covers the parts of a home or small office setup that people rarely check: a firewall with per application rules, inspection that flags routers with default credentials, open ports and weak wireless encryption, protection against spoofing on the local network, a web shield that blocks malicious and phishing pages before they render, and a mail shield that scans attachments in the client rather than waiting for them to be opened.

Key Features

  • Real time file, behaviour, web and mail shields running as separate layers
  • Ransomware shield protecting nominated folders with an application allow list
  • Hardened sandbox for running unknown applications under observation
  • Two way firewall with per application rules and network profile awareness
  • Network inspection flagging default router credentials, open ports and weak encryption
  • Boot time scan for removing deeply embedded infections before the system loads
  • Phishing and malicious site blocking before a page renders
  • Sensitive data protection for documents containing personal information
  • Webcam and microphone access control per application
  • Scheduled, on demand and removable media scanning with quarantine management

What Changed in This Build

  • Lower background resource use during idle scanning
  • Improved ransomware shield behaviour with backup and sync applications
  • Faster boot time scan on large drives
  • Network inspection expanded with more router and device checks

Installation Notes

  • Remove any other security suite before installing. Two real time scanners on one machine fight each other and slow everything down.
  • Add your backup and sync applications to the ransomware shield allow list before the first full backup runs.
  • Run one full scan after install, then leave the scheduled quick scan to handle ordinary days.

Before You Start

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.

There is no archive password on this or any other entry in the library. If something you downloaded elsewhere claims to come from here and asks for one, it did not come from here. Nothing on this site is behind a survey, a shortener or a countdown either.

If the entry does not match what the page describes, say so on the contact page and include the version string from the release details table. Reports naming a specific version get checked first because the checker can reproduce them straight away.

Frequently Asked

What does the Premium tier add?

The firewall, the ransomware shield, the sandbox, the mail shield, network inspection and sensitive data protection on top of the core scanner.

Can I keep the built in Windows protection as well?

Windows steps aside automatically when a third party suite registers. Running two active scanners manually is not recommended.

Does it slow the machine down?

Idle overhead is small. A full scan is heavy by nature, which is why the scheduled scan defaults to a quick pass.
