Overview

This is the client from the company that wrote the protocol, and the implementation shows it. Peer exchange, distributed hash table lookups, local peer discovery, magnet link handling, encrypted connections and the congestion control mechanism designed to keep transfers from saturating a household line are all handled the way the specification intended, because the specification came from the same place.

The interface is a list of transfers with the detail expanded below: the peers connected, the pieces already held, the trackers responding, the files inside the torrent and the transfer rate history. Individual files inside a transfer can be deselected so only what you want is fetched, priorities can be raised on the ones you want first, and sequential download pulls pieces in order so a large file becomes watchable before it finishes.

Bandwidth control is the part that keeps a client from making the connection unusable for everyone else. Global and per transfer limits on both directions, a scheduler that applies different limits by hour and day so heavy transfers run overnight, and a setting that automatically reduces upload when other traffic is detected on the line. Upload capacity is what determines whether the rest of the household can hold a video call.

The Pro tier removes the advertising panels, enables playback of media inside the client while it downloads, adds format conversion for playing on devices that will not take the source encoding, includes a scanning pass on completed transfers, and enables the remote interface so transfers can be added and managed from a browser or a phone while away from the machine.

Installation Notes

• Set a global upload limit below your line's actual capacity, a saturated upstream degrades every other connection in the house.
• Use the scheduler to push heavy transfers into the night rather than throttling manually every evening.
• Choose a save location with room before starting. Moving a large completed set afterwards takes longer than the download did.

Before You Start

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.
