Overview

uTorrent's original claim was size. A complete, competent torrent client in an executable smaller than most icons, which mattered enormously on the connections and machines of the era and still matters on anything old or constrained. The client remains small, starts instantly, and idles on almost no memory.

Underneath the small footprint is a full protocol implementation: DHT for trackerless operation, peer exchange, local peer discovery, magnet links, protocol encryption, UPnP and NAT-PMP port mapping, selective file downloading within a torrent, sequential ordering, per torrent and global speed limits, and a queue with ratio and seeding time rules.

The management layer is where daily use lives. Labels and folders for organising an active list, RSS feeds with filters for automatically fetching new items matching a rule, a bandwidth scheduler that shifts speed limits by hour so overnight transfers do not compete with working hours, and a remote web interface for controlling the client from another machine on the network.

The Pro tier removes advertising from the interface entirely and enables the extra features: streaming playback while a torrent is still downloading, format conversion for playing media on devices that will not read the source codec, and the integrated antivirus scanning pass on completed files. This build has all of that active.

Installation Notes

• Let it configure port mapping automatically on first run, or forward a port manually if your router does not support it.
• Set a global upload limit slightly below your line's capacity, otherwise saturated upstream slows every other connection on the network.
• Point the default save folder at a drive with room before you start, moving large completed sets afterwards is slow.

Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.
