Overview

Capture One is the raw processor that commercial and fashion studios standardised on, and the reason is colour. The camera profiles are built individually per body rather than derived generically, and the result out of the box is closer to what the photographer intended before a single slider moves. For skin tones in particular, the difference against a generic conversion is visible without pixel peeping.

Organisation works two ways, which is unusual and useful. Sessions are folder based and self contained, made for a single shoot that gets delivered and archived, and catalogs are database driven for a long running library. A session can be imported into a catalog later, so a photographer can work shoot by shoot and still end up with one searchable archive rather than choosing between the two models at the start.

The editing model is layer based rather than a flat stack of global sliders. Any adjustment can go on its own layer with a mask, masks can be drawn, gradient based, luminosity based or generated by subject and sky detection, and opacity applies per layer. Colour work runs through the colour editor with basic, advanced and skin tone tabs, where a narrow hue range can be selected and shifted without touching anything adjacent.

Tethered capture is the other pillar and it is the best in the field. Supported bodies are controlled from the application, exposure and focus are adjustable from the machine, captures land on screen within a second of the shutter, and a live view with overlays lets a layout be matched precisely. Capture pilot allows a client on a tablet to review and rate as the shoot progresses, which changes how a commercial set runs.

Installation Notes

• Use sessions for individual shoots and a catalog for the long term archive, the two are designed to work together rather than as alternatives.
• Calibrate your display before judging colour. The colour engine is the reason to use this application and an uncalibrated screen wastes it.
• For tethered work, use a powered cable on long runs, dropped captures on a studio set are almost always a cable problem.

Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.
