Overview

CCleaner has been the default first response to a slow, cluttered Windows install for a very long time. Its core job is straightforward: find the temporary files, caches, logs, thumbnails, crash dumps, installer leftovers and browser data that accumulate across a system, show you what it found and how much space it represents, and remove them on your instruction rather than automatically.

The cleaning scope is broader than the built in disk tools reach. Beyond the Windows temporary folders it covers browser caches and histories across the major browsers, application caches for a long list of installed software, the recycle bin, memory dumps, old prefetch data, log files and the leftovers of uninstalled programs. Everything is presented as a checklist so nothing is removed that you wanted kept.

The registry cleaner handles the other half of the accumulation problem: entries pointing at files that no longer exist, orphaned shared libraries, invalid file associations, broken shortcuts, obsolete uninstall records and dead startup references. It offers to back up before every change, and that backup is a single file you can restore in one step if something you rely on turns out to have depended on an entry that looked dead.

The tools section is where most of the practical daily use happens. A startup manager covering programs, scheduled tasks, context menu entries and browser extensions, a software uninstaller that works on entries the standard control panel refuses, duplicate file finding, drive wiping for free space or entire disks, disk analysis by file type, and a system restore point manager. The unlocked tiers add scheduled automatic cleaning, real time monitoring that prompts when junk accumulates, and automatic browser cleaning on close.

Installation Notes

  • Read the analysis list before running the clean. The defaults are conservative but browser cookies and saved sessions are easy to remove by accident.
  • Always accept the registry backup offer. It costs nothing and it is the only way back if something you use depended on an entry that looked orphaned.
  • Do not schedule aggressive automatic cleaning on a machine where someone else relies on saved browser sessions.

Before You Start

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.

There is no archive password on this or any other entry in the library. If something you downloaded elsewhere claims to come from here and asks for one, it did not come from here. Nothing on this site is behind a survey, a shortener or a countdown either.

If the entry does not match what the page describes, say so on the contact page and include the version string from the release details table. Reports naming a specific version get checked first because the checker can reproduce them straight away.

Frequently Asked

Will registry cleaning make my machine faster?

Rarely by itself. It tidies broken references and can fix odd behaviour, but the real speed gain usually comes from the startup manager.

Is it safe to clean browser data?

Yes, but it logs you out of sites and clears saved sessions unless you add those cookies to the retention list first.

What do the unlocked tiers add?

Scheduled cleaning, real time monitoring, automatic browser cleaning on close and the technician oriented multi machine tools.
