Overview

PowerDVD is the player that still does the thing most modern software players quietly dropped, which is play physical discs properly, including the high definition formats with their menus, chapters, bonus features and audio track selection intact. On a machine with an optical drive it remains the most complete option, and on a machine without one it is still a capable general player.

Playback quality is the Ultra tier's argument. Hardware decoding across the current video codecs keeps a high resolution file off the processor entirely, high dynamic range content is passed through correctly to a display that supports it, and the enhancement engine upscales lower resolution material with sharpening and noise handling that is noticeably better than a naive scale. Frame interpolation smooths lower frame rate sources for anyone who wants it.

Audio is handled with the same seriousness. Lossless and object based surround formats are passed through to a receiver bit perfect, the internal decoder handles them where passthrough is not available, and the enhancement suite adds virtual surround for headphones and speaker pairs, dialogue enhancement, dynamic range compression for late night viewing and a full equaliser. High resolution audio files play as a music library with cover art and playlists.

The library side turns it into a media centre. Local folders, attached drives and network shares are indexed into a browsable library with metadata, and the player streams from network storage without copying files locally. Casting sends playback to a television, a mobile companion controls the machine from across the room, and a television mode presents the whole thing at readable size for a screen you are not sitting in front of.

Key Features

  • Playback of physical discs including the high definition formats with menus and extras intact
  • Hardware accelerated decoding across the current video codecs
  • High dynamic range passthrough to supported displays
  • Upscaling and enhancement for lower resolution source material
  • Frame interpolation for smoothing lower frame rate sources
  • Lossless and object based surround audio passthrough, with internal decoding as a fallback

  • Media library indexing local folders, attached drives and network shares
  • Streaming from network storage without copying files locally
  • Casting to a television, mobile remote control and a large format television mode

What Changed in This Build

  • Updated hardware decoding paths for the current generation of graphics hardware

Installation Notes

  • Update your graphics driver before first use, hardware decoding and high dynamic range output both depend on it.
  • Set audio passthrough deliberately in the settings, the default decodes internally which is not what you want with a capable receiver.
  • Index network shares once when you are not using the machine, the first pass on a large library takes a while.

Before You Start

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.

There is no archive password on this or any other entry in the library. If something you downloaded elsewhere claims to come from here and asks for one, it did not come from here. Nothing on this site is behind a survey, a shortener or a countdown either.

If the entry does not match what the page describes, say so on the contact page and include the version string from the release details table. Reports naming a specific version get checked first because the checker can reproduce them straight away.

Frequently Asked

Does it play physical discs?

Yes, including the high definition formats with full menu, chapter and extras support, which is the main reason it is still installed.

Do I need a special display for high dynamic range?

For the benefit, yes. On a standard display the content is tone mapped down and still plays correctly.

Can it play my music library?

Yes, including high resolution audio formats, with cover art, playlists and an equaliser.
