DLC Boot

Overview

DLC Boot is the sort of package that lives permanently on a technician's USB stick. It is a bootable maintenance environment rather than an application, which is the entire point: when a machine will not start, when a partition table has gone, when a password is lost or when a drive is failing, the tools you need cannot be tools that require the broken system to boot first.

The environment starts from USB or optical media on both UEFI and legacy firmware, and presents a launcher grouping several dozen utilities by task. Partitioning and disk management, backup and imaging, password and account recovery, data recovery and undelete, hardware diagnostics and stress testing, driver injection, boot repair, registry editing against an offline installation, and file management with network support are all reachable from the same menu.

The disk section is the part most people boot it for. Partition editors that resize, move, merge and convert between table types, sector level imaging to and from external drives, clone operations for migrating a system onto a new SSD, boot record and boot configuration repair for the machines that fail after a failed update, and surface scanning with health reporting for deciding whether a drive is worth saving or worth replacing.

Around that sit the recovery and diagnostic tools. Undelete and deep scan recovery for pulling files off a partition that no longer mounts, offline account tools for resetting a forgotten local password, memory testing, processor and drive stress testing for tracking down intermittent faults, and a networking stack so a recovered set of files can be pushed straight to a share rather than juggled across external drives.

Installation Notes

• Write the image with a tool that handles the boot sector properly. A plain file copy onto a stick will not boot.
• Never write recovered files back onto the partition you are recovering from. Use a second drive.
• Disable secure boot in firmware if the stick is refused at startup, then turn it back on once the machine is repaired.

Before You Start

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.
