Overview

Driver management is one of those problems that only exists when it goes wrong, and then it consumes an afternoon. Driver Talent scans the hardware in the machine, identifies every device including the ones showing as unknown in the device list, and matches them against a driver database so the missing network adapter, the chipset driver nobody installed and the printer that was never quite right all get resolved in one pass.

The scan reports state per device rather than lumping everything together: up to date, outdated with a newer release available, missing entirely, or faulty where the installed driver is present but not working. Each entry can be handled individually, which matters because the correct answer for a graphics driver is often to leave it alone while the chipset and network drivers are updated.

Backup and rollback are the safety net and the reason the Pro tier is worth having. Every installed driver can be backed up to an archive before any change, a restore point is created automatically, and any single driver can be rolled back to its previous version without touching the others. A driver update that breaks something is therefore a two minute problem rather than a reinstall.

The prefetch mode solves the reinstall problem. Before wiping a machine, download the driver set for that exact hardware to a USB stick, and the freshly installed system gets its network and chipset drivers without needing a working network connection first. There is also a peripheral section covering printers, scanners, audio interfaces and game controllers, and a simple hardware inventory report listing what is actually inside the machine.

Installation Notes

• Back up the current driver set before your first update batch. It takes a few minutes and it is the difference between an inconvenience and a reinstall.
• Leave a working graphics driver alone unless you have a specific reason. Chipset, network and storage drivers are where updates actually help.
• Run prefetch before wiping a machine, not after. Getting the network driver onto a freshly installed system without a network is otherwise awkward.

Before You Start

Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.
