Overview

Data recovery software solves a problem that only exists for a limited window. When a file is deleted or a partition is formatted, the data itself usually remains on the disk until something else writes over it, and the file system entry pointing at it is what actually disappeared. This tool scans the raw surface for those orphaned structures and rebuilds the connection between them.

Scanning happens in two passes. The quick scan reads the file system structures and recovers recently deleted files with their names and folder paths intact, which handles the ordinary case of an emptied recycle bin in a couple of minutes. The deep scan reads the entire surface sector by sector looking for recognisable file signatures, which takes considerably longer but finds material on formatted, repartitioned and badly damaged drives where the file system itself is gone.

Results are presented so they can actually be used. Files are grouped by type, by folder path where it survived, and by whether they are intact or partially overwritten, and everything can be previewed before recovery so you know whether a photograph or a document is genuinely readable rather than a hopeful entry in a list. Filters by name, size and modification window narrow a scan that returned hundreds of thousands of results.

The bootable environment is what makes it useful in the worst case. Built onto a USB stick from a working machine, it boots a failed computer into a minimal environment with the recovery tool already running, so the internal disk can be scanned without the operating system on it ever starting and writing to the surface. It handles the common file systems, supports RAID reconstruction and works with external drives, memory cards and USB media as well.

Installation Notes

• Stop using the affected drive immediately. Every write to it reduces what can be recovered, and installing this tool onto that same drive is the single most common way people destroy their own data.
• Always recover to a different physical drive than the one being scanned.
• Build the bootable stick from a working machine before you need it if the affected computer is the only one you have.

Before You Start

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.
