Overview

Partition work is one of those tasks that Windows will let you do just far enough to be frustrating. The built in management console can shrink a volume until it hits an immovable file and then stops, cannot move a partition at all, and will not merge two of them. This tool does all of it, on live volumes, without destroying what is on them.

The core operations are resize, move, merge, split, create, delete, format and label, all queued as pending changes and applied together when you commit. Operations that cannot run while Windows is using the volume are scheduled to execute automatically during the next boot, before the operating system loads, which is how a system partition gets resized without any manual intervention.

Disk migration is the other main use. Cloning a whole disk to a new one, migrating just the operating system to a smaller solid state drive with the partitions resized to fit, and copying individual partitions between disks are all supported, with the boot configuration adjusted so the destination actually starts rather than producing an unbootable copy that has to be repaired afterwards.

The conversion and repair tools cover the awkward cases: converting between MBR and GPT partition tables without reinstalling, converting between primary and logical partitions, converting file systems between FAT and NTFS in place, rebuilding a damaged master boot record, checking a partition surface for bad sectors, wiping a disk securely, and recovering partitions that were deleted or lost when a partition table was damaged. A bootable environment builds onto a USB stick for machines that will not start.

Installation Notes

• Back up anything irreplaceable before touching partitions. These operations are safe in normal use and catastrophic in the rare failure.
• Do not interrupt an operation once it has started, especially one running during boot. A power loss mid move is the one scenario this cannot recover from.
• Build the bootable stick before you need it, since a machine that will not start is a poor place to find out you have not made one.
