Overview

Foxit built its reputation on being the PDF application that opens instantly, and the editor kept that quality while growing into a full featured product. It launches faster than its main competitor, uses noticeably less memory on large documents, and the ribbon interface is close enough to the office applications that nobody needs training to find anything.

Editing works at both the paragraph and the object level. Text reflows within a paragraph as you type, fonts are matched and substituted where the original was not embedded, and there is an object mode for moving, resizing and restyling individual elements when the automatic layout detection guesses wrong. Pages can be inserted, extracted, split, merged, cropped, rotated and reordered, and content can be edited across a whole document rather than page by page.

Conversion and recognition cover the practical middle of most PDF work. Export to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, HTML, RTF and image formats preserves tables and layout rather than dumping loose text, creation runs from any printable source through a virtual printer or through integration into the office applications, and OCR handles scanned paper in dozens of languages, producing either a searchable layer over the original image or fully editable text.

The professional feature set covers review, forms and protection. Shared review with comment threads, side by side document comparison with a difference report, fillable form creation with field recognition, calculation and data export, true redaction that removes the underlying content, metadata sanitisation, permission and password protection, digital signature workflows with certificate support, and Bates numbering for anyone producing document sets for legal use.

Installation Notes

  • Set your default PDF handler in Windows settings after install rather than letting several applications compete for the association.
  • Install after your office suite if you want the ribbon integration for creating PDFs directly from documents.
  • Run OCR before attempting to edit a scanned page, since without it the page is an image and nothing on it is text.

Before You Start

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.

There is no archive password on this or any other entry in the library. If something you downloaded elsewhere claims to come from here and asks for one, it did not come from here. Nothing on this site is behind a survey, a shortener or a countdown either.

If the entry does not match what the page describes, say so on the contact page and include the version string from the release details table. Reports naming a specific version get checked first because the checker can reproduce them straight away.

Frequently Asked

How does it compare to the market leader?

It covers the same working feature set, starts considerably faster and uses less memory. Very exotic prepress and preflight work is where the difference shows.

Can it edit scanned documents?

After OCR, yes. Accuracy depends on scan quality and 300 dpi is the practical minimum.

Does redaction really remove the content?

Yes, once applied. Applying rewrites the file rather than drawing a box over the text.
