Overview

Drives rarely fail without warning. They fail after weeks of reallocated sectors, rising error counts and slowly degrading read performance that nobody looked at because nothing surfaced it. This application surfaces it. It reads the diagnostic attributes every drive keeps internally, interprets them into a single health percentage per disk, and tells you plainly when that number starts moving in the wrong direction.

Coverage extends past ordinary internal disks. Conventional drives, solid state drives with wear levelling and remaining life estimation, drives behind universal serial bus enclosures, network attached storage over the standard protocols, memory cards, and drives sitting behind many hardware controllers that normally hide their members from the operating system. For a machine with a mixed set of storage, having all of it in one list is the practical value.

Alerting is configurable and thorough, which matters because a warning nobody sees is not a warning. Notifications can appear on screen, run a command, write to a log, send a message on the network or trigger a backup script. Thresholds are separate for health, temperature and performance, so a drive running warm during a long copy does not generate the same alarm as one that has started reallocating sectors.

The tool set covers what you do after the warning. Surface tests in read, write and refresh modes, extended self tests initiated on the drive itself, a disk performance monitor showing sustained transfer rates and access times, an acoustic management control for trading noise against seek speed, and temperature history so you can tell whether a drive that is running hot today has been running hot for months.

Installation Notes

• Set up alerting on the first run. Monitoring nobody looks at is the same as no monitoring.
• A health figure that drops even slightly is worth acting on. Copy the data first and investigate afterwards.
• Run the write mode surface test only on a drive you are prepared to erase, it overwrites the tested area.

Before You Start

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.
