Overview

Running a full operating system from an external drive solves a set of problems nothing else solves cleanly. A technician carries their own configured environment between machines. A support engineer boots a known good system on a customer's hardware without touching the internal disk. Someone with a locked down work laptop keeps their own system in a pocket. This tool builds that drive.

The source can be an installation image, physical installation media, or an existing installation on the machine, and that last option is the interesting one. Cloning a working system to an external drive produces a portable copy of an environment that is already set up, with applications, settings and files intact, rather than a fresh install that has to be configured from nothing.

The build handles the parts that make external booting actually work rather than merely appear to. Boot configuration is written correctly for both the older and newer firmware paths so the drive appears in either kind of boot menu, the drivers needed for booting from external storage are injected, and the resulting system tolerates being moved between machines with different hardware rather than failing on the first boot elsewhere.

The remaining functions cover the adjacent jobs: creating ordinary installation media from an image, building a portable workspace from an enterprise image, converting between drive layouts, and duplicating a finished portable drive onto more of them for anyone preparing a set. Both partitioning schemes are supported, and the target can be a stick, an external solid state drive or a spinning disk in an enclosure.

Installation Notes

• Use an external solid state drive rather than a flash stick if you intend to work from it, sticks make the system painfully slow.
• Everything on the target drive is erased during the build, so check twice which drive is selected.
• Match the boot configuration to the machines you intend to use, a drive written for the wrong firmware path will not appear in the boot menu at all.

Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.
