Overview

The selling point here has always been throughput. Most tunnelling clients use general purpose protocols that were designed for reliability rather than speed, and the overhead shows on a fast line. This client uses its own transport protocol tuned for high bandwidth connections, which is why it consistently benchmarks near the top on speed tests even when connected to a distant server.

The client itself is deliberately plain. One button connects to the fastest server it can find, a list lets you pick a specific country or city when location matters, and a favourites section keeps the two or three you actually use at the top. Connection state is visible at a glance and the client reconnects automatically if the underlying network changes, such as moving from wireless to a wired connection.

Split tunnelling is the feature that makes it practical on a working machine. Applications and websites can be excluded from the tunnel individually, so a banking site that objects to a foreign address or a local network printer keeps working normally while everything else routes through the connection. The reverse mode is also available, tunnelling only nominated applications and leaving everything else direct.

The protective layer covers the ordinary risks of an untrusted network. The kill switch drops all traffic if the tunnel fails rather than silently falling back to the open connection, automatic connection triggers when joining an unknown wireless network, and the client handles domain name resolution inside the tunnel so lookups do not leak to the local network. Simultaneous connections cover the usual household device count on one licence.

Installation Notes

• Add your bank and any local network device to the split tunnelling exclusion list before you need them, not while a payment is failing.
• Leave the kill switch enabled. Without it, a dropped tunnel silently returns traffic to the open connection.
• If throughput is poor, try a nearer server before assuming the client is at fault, distance dominates latency regardless of protocol.

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.
