Overview

The reason this pack has survived for two decades is that it is curated rather than comprehensive. Codec packs used to be notorious for installing forty conflicting filters and leaving a machine unable to play anything at all. This one selects a coherent set, configures it sensibly, resolves the priority conflicts between filters in advance, and includes a tool for repairing the situation if something else on the machine breaks it later.

The contents cover decoding for essentially every container and stream in circulation: the current and legacy video codecs, the full range of audio formats including multi channel and lossless, subtitle rendering with styling and font support, splitters for the containers that need them, and the filters that let other applications on the machine use the same decoders rather than shipping their own.

A tuned player is included and configured on install, with hardware accelerated decoding enabled where the graphics hardware supports it, subtitle handling that finds and loads matching files automatically, audio device configuration for stereo through to multi channel output with downmixing when a track has more channels than the speakers do, and playback settings that survive the file being closed and reopened.

The installer offers several profiles, from a minimal set for someone who only wants decoding to a full set with the player, the encoding filters and the additional tools. An advanced mode exposes every component individually for anyone who knows precisely what they want, and the bundled configuration tools cover filter priority, codec settings, hardware acceleration and the association of file types with the player.

Key Features

  • Curated decoder set covering current and legacy video formats
  • Full audio support including multi channel, lossless and legacy formats
  • Container splitters and system filters usable by other applications on the machine
  • Subtitle rendering with styling, font support and automatic file matching
  • Tuned player included and configured during install
  • Hardware accelerated decoding enabled where the graphics hardware supports it
  • Audio device configuration with downmixing for multi channel tracks
  • Several install profiles from minimal decoding to the full set
  • Advanced mode exposing every component individually
  • Configuration and repair tools for filter priority and file associations

What Changed in This Build

  • Decoder components updated to their current builds

Installation Notes

  • Remove other codec packs before installing. Mixed packs conflicting over filter priority is the classic cause of a machine that plays nothing.
  • Take the standard profile unless you know why you want something else. The advanced mode is easy to misconfigure.
  • If playback breaks after installing unrelated software, run the bundled repair tool before reinstalling anything.

Before You Start

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.

There is no archive password on this or any other entry in the library. If something you downloaded elsewhere claims to come from here and asks for one, it did not come from here. Nothing on this site is behind a survey, a shortener or a countdown either.

If the entry does not match what the page describes, say so on the contact page and include the version string from the release details table. Reports naming a specific version get checked first because the checker can reproduce them straight away.

Frequently Asked

Do I still need a codec pack?

For a modern player that carries its own decoders, not always. It matters when you want every application on the machine, including older ones, to play the same formats.

Will it conflict with my existing player?

It is built to coexist and can be installed without changing file associations, which the installer asks about explicitly.

Which profile should I pick?

The standard one for most people. Minimal if you only want decoders for another player, full if you want the encoding filters and extra tools.
