Overview

Malwarebytes earned its place on most technicians' USB sticks by cleaning up the category of junk that classic antivirus historically ignored. Toolbars, search hijackers, bundled installers, adware injectors, coupon extensions and the general sediment that accumulates on a family computer are all treated as threats here rather than as software the user technically agreed to install, and the removal is thorough rather than cosmetic.

The scan engine works on signatures, heuristics and behaviour together. A threat scan covers memory, startup entries, the registry, scheduled tasks, browser extensions and the file system locations that matter, and finishes in a few minutes rather than an afternoon. A custom scan can be pointed at a single folder or an external drive, and a hyper scan checks only memory and startup for a fast verdict when someone asks whether a machine is clean right now.

The Premium tier is where it stops being a cleanup tool and becomes protection. Four real time layers run alongside each other: web protection blocks known malicious and phishing hosts before a page loads, exploit protection watches for the shellcode and memory tricks that document and browser exploits use, malware protection catches files as they land, and ransomware protection watches for the encryption behaviour pattern and rolls back the files a process touched.

It is designed to coexist. The application can run as the only protection on a machine or alongside another antivirus without the two fighting over file handles, which is unusual in this category and is the reason it so often ends up as a second opinion scanner on a machine where something is clearly wrong but the installed suite reports nothing. Quarantine keeps every removal reversible, and a full report of what was found and where is written after each scan.

Key Features

  • Threat, custom and hyper scan modes covering memory, startup, registry, tasks and files
  • Detection tuned for adware, browser hijackers, bundleware and potentially unwanted programs
  • Real time web protection against known malicious and phishing hosts
  • Exploit protection covering browser and document memory attacks
  • Ransomware protection with behavioural detection and file rollback
  • Brute force protection for exposed remote desktop endpoints
  • Reversible quarantine with a full report after every scan
  • Scheduled scanning with configurable frequency and scope
  • Coexists with another antivirus without file handle conflicts
  • Browser extension for blocking trackers, scam pages and intrusive ad scripts

What Changed in This Build

  • Detection database refreshed with recent adware and bundleware families

Installation Notes

  • Run a full threat scan before enabling real time protection on a machine you suspect is already infected, so the cleanup happens first.
  • If you keep another antivirus installed, add each product to the other's exclusion list to avoid a scanning loop.
  • Do not empty quarantine immediately. Leave removals recoverable for a few days in case something legitimate was caught.

Before You Start

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.

There is no archive password on this or any other entry in the library. If something you downloaded elsewhere claims to come from here and asks for one, it did not come from here. Nothing on this site is behind a survey, a shortener or a countdown either.

If the entry does not match what the page describes, say so on the contact page and include the version string from the release details table. Reports naming a specific version get checked first because the checker can reproduce them straight away.

Frequently Asked

Can it run alongside my existing antivirus?

Yes. It is built to coexist and is very often used exactly that way, as a second opinion scanner on a machine that is misbehaving.

What is the difference from the free version?

The free version scans and cleans on demand. Premium adds the four real time protection layers, scheduled scanning and the browser component.

Will it remove something I actually wanted?

Occasionally, since bundled toolbars and aggressive optimisers are flagged by design. Everything goes to quarantine first and can be restored.
