Overview

MATLAB is the environment engineering and scientific work has been done in for decades, and the reason is that the language treats a matrix as the natural unit rather than as a data structure you build. An operation that would be three nested loops elsewhere is one line here, and it runs against a numerical library that has been tuned for longer than most software has existed.

The desktop is the working surface: an editor with live cell execution, a command window for interactive exploration, a workspace browser showing every variable and its contents, a path manager, an integrated debugger with conditional breakpoints, and a profiler that shows exactly where a slow script is spending its time. Live scripts combine code, formatted text, equations and output in one document, which is how most teaching material and internal analysis reports are produced.

Installation Notes

  • Install only the toolboxes you expect to use unless disk space is irrelevant to you. A full install is very large and most of it will never be opened.
  • The installer runs for a long time with little visible progress on the toolbox extraction stage. Let it finish.
  • Set the working folder and search path once after install rather than adding folders ad hoc, since a messy path is the usual cause of a function resolving to the wrong file.

Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.
