Overview

There is a category of machine that does one job, does it on hardware that was cheap when it was bought and has never needed replacing, and requires an office suite that does not consume the entire system to open a letter. Office 2010 is the answer to that machine. It installs in minutes, launches instantly on a spinning disk, and runs on memory that current suites would not finish loading on.

The application set is the full Professional Plus line: the word processor, the spreadsheet, the presentation tool, the mail client, the database, the desktop publisher, the note taking application, the communication client and the form designer. This is the release where the ribbon interface settled into the shape it has kept ever since, and where the backstage view replaced the old file menu, so anyone moving between this and a current suite is not learning a different application.

Feature wise this generation introduced a lot that is now taken for granted. Sparklines and slicers arrived in the spreadsheet along with the first version of the data model add in for larger sets. The presentation tool gained video editing and background removal on images. The word processor gained the navigation pane and the paste preview that shows the result before committing. The mail client gained conversation view and the ignore function that most people still use daily.

Both architectures are prepared and selected during setup. For this generation, the 32-bit build is usually the correct answer, since almost every add in written for the era targets it and the memory ceiling rarely matters on the workloads these machines run. The 64-bit build is there for the exception. The suite is fully offline with no check in of any kind, which on an isolated or air gapped machine is not a nice to have but the entire requirement.

Installation Notes

• Choose 32-bit unless you have a specific reason not to. Almost every add in from this era targets it.
• Remove any other Office generation first. The mail client in particular will not share a machine with a second generation.
• On a modern system, set the file associations manually after install so newer formats still open where you expect.
