Overview

Office 2013 is the generation where the interface went flat and the suite learned to touch, and for a great many offices it is still the version in daily use. It asks very little of the hardware, opens almost instantly on modest machines, and every macro, template and add in built during the previous decade continues to work exactly as written.

Excel 2013 is the reason most people stayed. Flash Fill infers a pattern from a couple of examples and fills a column without a formula, Quick Analysis puts charts, totals and conditional formatting one click from a selection, and the Power Pivot data model was moved into the core product rather than living as a separate add in. Recommended Charts remains the fastest way to get a defensible chart in front of somebody in a hurry.

Word 2013 added a read mode that reflows a document into columns for screen reading, the ability to open and edit PDF files directly as Word documents, and inline reply comments that made review threads readable. PowerPoint gained presenter view on a single monitor, widescreen defaults and the alignment guides that made slide layout stop being an argument.

The Professional Plus package includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access, Publisher, OneNote, InfoPath and Lync. Both architectures ship in the same download with the choice made at setup, and the 32-bit build in particular is the correct answer here since a large amount of the add in ecosystem from this era was never rebuilt for 64-bit.

Installation Notes

• Choose 32-bit unless you have a specific reason not to. Most add ins from this generation were never rebuilt for the wider architecture.
• Uninstall any newer Office generation first. Two generations sharing a machine break file associations and Outlook profiles.
• If you rely on InfoPath forms, install it during setup rather than trying to add it afterwards.

Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.
