Overview

Office 2016 Professional Plus is the generation that a very large number of machines never moved off, and the reasons are practical rather than sentimental. It runs on hardware that newer suites refuse, it starts fast on a spinning disk, it works entirely offline, and every add in and macro written for the previous decade still loads without complaint.

The package covers Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access, Publisher, OneNote and Skype for Business. Excel 2016 introduced the modern chart types including waterfall, treemap, sunburst, histogram and box and whisker, brought Power Query into the ribbon as Get and Transform rather than a bolted on add in, and shipped forecast sheets for anyone doing quick trend work without a statistics package.

Word carries real time coauthoring on shared documents, the smart lookup research pane and improved equation input. PowerPoint carries the designer pane and Morph, which between them cover most of what people want from presentation software without ever opening an animation timeline. Outlook 2016 added the group calendars, attachment history from recent files and a rebuilt search that finally returns results at typing speed on large mailboxes.

Both architectures are included in one package and the choice is made during setup. The 64-bit build is correct for large workbooks and heavy data models, while the 32-bit build remains the right answer on machines carrying legacy add ins, ActiveX controls and older database connectors that were never rebuilt. Language packs are selected at install so a single download covers a mixed language office.

Installation Notes

  • Remove every earlier Office generation, including any trial the manufacturer preloaded, before running setup. Mixed generations cause most install failures.
  • Pick your architecture deliberately. Changing between 32-bit and 64-bit later requires a complete reinstall of the suite.
  • Setup can appear to stall near the end on older disks. Let it run rather than restarting it.

Before You Start

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.

There is no archive password on this or any other entry in the library. If something you downloaded elsewhere claims to come from here and asks for one, it did not come from here. Nothing on this site is behind a survey, a shortener or a countdown either.

If the entry does not match what the page describes, say so on the contact page and include the version string from the release details table. Reports naming a specific version get checked first because the checker can reproduce them straight away.

Frequently Asked

Will it run on Windows 7?

Yes, on Service Pack 1 or newer. That is one of the main reasons this generation is still installed on older machines.

How does it differ from the 2019 suite?

Mainly the newer function set and chart types in the later release. For ordinary document, mail and spreadsheet work the difference is small.

Can I install only some applications?

Yes. Setup lists every application and installs only what you tick.
