Overview

This is one of the oldest tools in the category and it has stayed in circulation because it does more than one thing. Where the newer utilities are single purpose, this bundles activation alongside licence inspection, product removal, installation customisation and a set of information views, which is why it tends to be the one that stays on a technician's stick rather than being replaced.

The interface is split into two modules, one for the platform and one for the office suite, each with its own tabs. The activation tab handles the operation itself with both the local service approach and direct key installation. The licence tab lists installed keys, current status, the edition detected and the remaining state, and can install, remove or backup and restore the licence data on the machine.

The office module carries the extra functions that make it worth keeping. It can remove an office installation completely, including the fragments a normal uninstall leaves behind that block a later reinstall, it can add or remove individual applications from an existing installation without a full reinstall, and it can build a customised installation package with a chosen set of applications and settings for deploying across several machines.

Everything is reported rather than assumed. Each tab writes to a log pane showing exactly what ran and what it returned, the information views show system and installation detail including edition, build, channel and install path, and nothing runs automatically on launch, so the tool can be opened purely to inspect a machine and closed again without having changed anything.

• Back up the licence data before removing a key, since restoring it afterwards is far easier than reconstructing it.
