Overview

Firefox matters for a structural reason as much as a practical one, which is that it does not use the same rendering engine as almost everything else. A web where one engine decides what works is a web where one company sets the standards in practice regardless of what the specifications say, and keeping a second independent implementation in use is the only thing preventing that. That is the argument. The practical arguments happen to be good too.

Tracking protection is on by default rather than being an option buried three screens deep. Cross site cookies are partitioned so a tracker cannot follow you between sites, known fingerprinting and cryptomining scripts are blocked, referrer information is trimmed, and a strict mode is available for anyone willing to accept the occasional broken site in exchange for tighter defaults. Container tabs go further, keeping entirely separate cookie stores per context so a session in one does not exist in another.

The customisation surface is the other reason long term users stay. The interface can be rearranged, the extension platform still permits add ons that genuinely change how the browser behaves rather than only decorating pages, userstyle and userscript support survives, and the configuration editor exposes several thousand settings for anyone who wants to change something the settings screen does not mention.

Day to day it carries what you expect. Installation Notes

• Import bookmarks and passwords during the first run rather than later, since the import tool is easier to find then.
• Strict tracking protection occasionally breaks a login flow. The shield icon disables it per site without changing the global setting.
• Set up synchronisation before you customise heavily, so your profile survives a machine rebuild.
