Overview

ChatGPT Classic is the desktop client rather than a browser tab, and the difference is what it can see. A global hotkey brings a compact prompt bar over whatever you are working in, and from there the assistant can take a screenshot of the active window, read a file you drop on it, pull the selected text out of an editor, or simply answer a question without you leaving the application you were in. For anyone who spends the day alt tabbing between a document and a search box, that shortcut is the whole product.

The Classic line keeps the conversation model that people learned first: a linear thread with editable turns, branching from any earlier message, and a sidebar of named conversations that can be foldered, pinned and searched by content rather than only by title. Threads persist locally so a machine that goes offline still shows everything you have already discussed, and the search index covers attachments as well as message text.

File handling is broader than the web client. Documents, spreadsheets, slide decks, source files, archives and images can be attached to a turn, and the client extracts text and structure locally before sending, which keeps large attachments workable. Screenshot capture is built in with a region selector, so pointing at an error dialog or a chart and asking what it means takes one keystroke rather than a save and upload cycle.

Around the assistant there is a working surface: prompt templates saved per project, a snippet library for instructions you reuse, per conversation custom instructions that override the global ones, exportable transcripts in plain text and formatted output, voice input with local transcription, and a compact mode that shrinks the window into a corner strip for quick questions while you keep working elsewhere.

Key Features

  • Global hotkey prompt bar that appears over any application without switching windows
  • Screenshot capture with region select, so an error dialog or chart can be asked about directly
  • Attachment handling for documents, spreadsheets, slides, source files, archives and images
  • Local conversation store with full text search across messages and attachment contents
  • Branching from any earlier turn, with editable prompts and side by side response comparison
  • Prompt templates and a reusable snippet library organised per project
  • Per conversation custom instructions that override the global preference set
  • Voice input with local transcription and a hands free dictation mode
  • Compact corner mode for quick questions during other work
  • Transcript export in plain text and formatted output for pasting into reports

What Changed in This Build

  • Screenshot capture rewritten with a faster region selector and multi monitor awareness
  • Local search now indexes attachment contents rather than only message text
  • Compact mode remembers its position per monitor arrangement
  • Reduced memory footprint on very long conversation histories

Installation Notes

  • Set the global hotkey during first run to something that does not collide with your editor, the default is a common combination.
  • The local conversation store grows with attachments. Point it at a drive with headroom if you attach large documents regularly.
  • Screenshot capture needs the display permission prompt accepted once. Decline it and the capture button stays greyed out.

Before You Start

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.

There is no archive password on this or any other entry in the library. If something you downloaded elsewhere claims to come from here and asks for one, it did not come from here. Nothing on this site is behind a survey, a shortener or a countdown either.

If the entry does not match what the page describes, say so on the contact page and include the version string from the release details table. Reports naming a specific version get checked first because the checker can reproduce them straight away.

Frequently Asked

Is this different from the browser version?

The conversation model is the same. The desktop client adds the global hotkey, screenshot capture, local history and file handling that a browser tab cannot do.

Does history stay on my machine?

Conversations are stored locally and remain readable without a connection. Responses themselves require the network.

Can it read the window I am looking at?

Only when you capture it. Nothing is read continuously, capture is a deliberate keystroke each time.
