Overview

PDF-XChange Editor built its reputation on speed. It opens a five hundred page technical manual while heavier viewers are still drawing their splash screen, scrolls without stutter on scanned documents, and searches the full text of a long file in the time other readers take to build a thumbnail panel. For anyone who lives in documentation all day, that alone is the reason it stays installed.

The editing surface is complete. Text can be edited in place with font matching, images inserted and replaced, pages inserted, extracted, split, rotated, cropped and reordered, and content moved between documents by dragging thumbnails from one window into another. Headers, footers, Bates numbering, watermarks and backgrounds are applied across ranges rather than page by page.

The Plus edition adds the form and dynamic stamp tools. Fillable forms can be built from scratch or detected in a flat scan, with text fields, checkboxes, radio groups, dropdowns, calculation and validation scripting, and data import and export for round tripping submissions. Dynamic stamps carry live fields such as the reviewer name and a relative timestamp rather than being fixed images.

OCR turns scans into searchable documents with a selectable text layer that sits over the original image, preserving the visual appearance while making the content findable. Alongside that sit the review tools: annotations of every type, measurement for scaled drawings, comment summarising into a separate report, redaction that removes the underlying content, and document comparison that marks the differences between two revisions.

Installation Notes

• Install the OCR language packs you actually need during setup, taking every language costs a great deal of disk for no benefit.
• Set it as the default PDF handler from Windows settings rather than accepting a browser prompt, which only changes the browser.
• The included virtual printer installs as a separate device. Leave it selected during setup if you want printing to PDF from other applications.

Before You Start

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.
