Overview

WorkBench is the standalone edition of a correction engine most people first meet as a plugin. The premise is that the majority of what a retoucher does to a normal photograph is not creative, it is corrective, and those corrections can be decided per image by analysing the image rather than by applying the same slider positions to everything in the folder.

The engine analyses each frame independently and derives its own corrections. Exposure and dynamic range are set from the actual histogram distribution rather than a fixed curve, colour casts are identified against the light source and removed, skin tones are recognised and protected while the rest of the frame is adjusted, sharpening is applied according to the detail actually present, and noise reduction responds to the noise that is there rather than to an assumed ISO.

The portrait tools sit on top of that. Face detection drives blemish removal, skin smoothing that keeps texture, eye enhancement and catchlight recovery, teeth whitening, dark circle reduction, face slimming and eyelash and eyebrow work, all applied at a strength you set once and then applied per face rather than per image. For a school photographer or an event shooter with several thousand frames from one afternoon, this is the difference between a week and an evening.

Everything runs as a batch. Point it at a folder, choose a preset group, and it processes the lot with per image decisions, writing output at whatever size, format and colour space you specify while leaving the originals untouched. Presets can be built and chained, corrections can be reviewed and overridden per image before committing, and the same engine is available as a plugin inside the mainstream editors for the frames that need attention afterwards.

Key Features

  • Per image analysis deriving corrections from the frame rather than applying a fixed preset
  • Automatic exposure, dynamic range and contrast correction from the actual histogram
  • Colour cast identification and removal against the detected light source
  • Skin tone recognition and protection while the rest of the frame is corrected
  • Adaptive sharpening and noise reduction responding to the detail and noise present
  • Portrait tools with blemish removal, texture preserving skin smoothing and eye enhancement
  • Teeth whitening, dark circle reduction, face slimming and eyelash work per detected face
  • Batch processing across folders with originals left untouched
  • Preset building and chaining with per image review and override before committing
  • Plugin versions for the mainstream editors alongside the standalone application

What Changed in This Build

  • Faster batch throughput on multi core machines
  • Improved face detection on group photographs and profile angles

Installation Notes

  • Run a small test batch and review the results before committing several thousand frames, preset strength is the only thing you need to get right.
  • Point the output at a separate folder, the tool never overwrites originals but a clean separation makes culling easier.
  • Install the plugin versions after your host editors so the installers find the correct plugin folders.

Before You Start

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.

There is no archive password on this or any other entry in the library. If something you downloaded elsewhere claims to come from here and asks for one, it did not come from here. Nothing on this site is behind a survey, a shortener or a countdown either.

If the entry does not match what the page describes, say so on the contact page and include the version string from the release details table. Reports naming a specific version get checked first because the checker can reproduce them straight away.

Frequently Asked

How is this different from a preset?

A preset applies the same values to every image. This analyses each image and derives different values for each one, which is why it works across a mixed shoot.

Does it handle raw files?

Yes, alongside the common raster formats, with output written to your chosen format and colour space.

Can I override its decisions?

Yes. Every correction is exposed and can be adjusted per image before the batch is committed.
