Overview

The audio codec on the motherboard of most desktops and a large share of laptops comes from one manufacturer, which is why this driver package turns up on so many machines. The generic driver the platform installs by default will produce sound, but it produces only sound: no front panel jack detection, no jack retasking, no surround configuration, no equaliser and frequently no working microphone array on a laptop.

This package installs the full stack. The codec driver itself, the audio control panel for configuring outputs and inputs, the jack detection service that notices when something is plugged into the front panel and asks what it is, the speaker configuration for stereo through to multi channel surround, and the effects components covering equalisation, environment simulation, bass management and loudness compensation.

It also fixes a specific and very common complaint. After a platform upgrade, the front panel headphone jack often stops being detected, or output continues through the speakers when headphones are connected, or the microphone input records nothing but noise. Nearly all of those are the generic driver rather than the hardware, and installing the full package with the jack detection component resolves them.

Installation Notes

• Reboot after installing even if the installer does not insist. Audio drivers frequently only settle after a restart.
• If the machine currently has no sound at all, uninstall the existing audio device from device manager first, then install this package.
• On a laptop, check the manufacturer package first if the machine has speaker tuning specific to that model.
