Overview

Affinity Photo is a complete raster editor that opens instantly and stays responsive on large documents, which after the layer stack itself is the thing people notice first. It is built around persona switching: the same document is edited in a photo persona, developed from raw in a develop persona, retouched for liquify, mapped for tone in an HDR persona and exported through an export persona, all without leaving the file.

The editing core is everything expected of a professional raster tool. Unlimited layers with groups and clipping, pixel and vector layers in the same document, masks and live masks, blend modes with per channel range control, adjustment layers, and a live filter layer stack that stays editable indefinitely so a blur or a distortion applied at the start of a session can be changed at the end of it.

Photographic specialisms come built in rather than as add ons. Raw development with lens correction and per channel curves, focus stacking that merges a bracketed set into one fully sharp frame, panorama stitching with automatic alignment and correction, HDR merging with tone mapping, and a batch processor that runs a macro across a folder of images unattended.

Retouching covers the usual professional needs: frequency separation as a built in operation rather than a manual channel exercise, inpainting for object removal, dodge and burn on a non destructive layer, clone and healing with source alignment, and selection refinement for hair and fine edges. Output is colour managed through CMYK and spot support, with export presets writing several sizes and formats in one pass.

Installation Notes

• Set the scratch location to a fast drive with headroom before working on large documents, the default sits on the system disk.
• Enable hardware acceleration in preferences after install, it is not always on by default depending on the detected card.
• Save as the native format while working. Flattening to a common format loses the live filter stack that makes the editor worth using.
