Overview

Smadav is built on an unusual premise: it does not try to be your antivirus. It is designed from the ground up to sit alongside one, with a tiny footprint, no kernel level filter driver fighting the main product, and a focus on the specific categories of threat that general purpose scanners historically handle least well.

Removable media is the specialisation. The resident component watches for drives being attached and scans them before anything on them runs, targeting the autorun mechanisms, the hidden folder and shortcut tricks that make a memory stick look empty when it is not, and the executables masquerading as documents. Where an infection has already hidden the real files, the recovery tool restores their attributes rather than leaving them invisible.

The Pro tier adds the parts that make it practical to run continuously. Automatic signature updates rather than manual ones, a higher scanning priority so a full pass finishes in a fraction of the time, exception rules for files and folders that trigger the heuristic wrongly, an administrator password on the settings so nobody else changes them, and interface colour options which is a small thing but people ask for it.

The toolset around the scanner is aimed at cleaning up after something has already happened. A process manager showing what is running with its parent and its file location, a system editor for the registry values that infections routinely change, a one virus by one tool for handing a specific sample to the cleaner, and a repair pass for the classic symptoms: a disabled task manager, a locked folder options dialog, a blocked registry editor and a hijacked file association.

Installation Notes

• Keep your main antivirus installed. This is a second layer by design and is not intended to be the only thing protecting a machine.
• Add your development and portable application folders to the exception list early, the heuristic is deliberately aggressive.
• Set the administrator password if the machine is shared, otherwise anyone can switch the protection off from the tray.

Before You Start

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.
