Overview

StartAllBack puts back the shell behaviour that recent Windows builds removed, and it does it by patching the running shell rather than replacing it with a separate program. The taskbar stays the real taskbar, the start menu stays the real start menu, they simply behave the way they did before someone decided you did not need those options any more.

The taskbar work is the headline. Move it to the top, left or right edge again, ungroup buttons and show labels, resize icons independently of the taskbar height, restore the classic context menu with the task manager entry, bring back drag and drop onto taskbar buttons, and control the system tray overflow the way it used to work rather than through the current flyout.

The start menu can be returned to a two column layout with a proper all programs list, folder based organisation, and search that finds a program by its name without routing the query anywhere else. Alternatively the current menu can be kept and simply reorganised, with the recommended section removed and the pinned grid resized, which is what most people actually want.

File Explorer gets the same treatment. The ribbon comes back for anyone who prefers it, the command bar can be replaced with the classic toolbar, the full context menu appears without a second click, details pane and navigation pane behaviour is restored, and the tab strip can be kept or removed. Everything is toggled from a single settings panel with a live preview, and every change is reversible without a reboot.

Installation Notes

• A shell restart happens during install, so save open work first. Explorer windows close and reopen.
• After a large operating system feature update, open the settings panel once to let it reapply, it is not automatic in every case.
• Do not run it alongside another shell replacement, the two will fight over the same hooks.

Before You Start

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.
