Overview

Stata is the package that economists, epidemiologists, political scientists and public health researchers reach for when an analysis has to be defensible line by line. Everything happens through commands, every command can be written into a do file, and a do file plus the source data reproduces a result exactly. That property is the whole reason the software has held its place for decades against tools with prettier interfaces.

Data management is unusually strong for a statistics package. Reshaping between wide and long, merging and appending with match diagnostics, collapsing to summary levels, handling of survey weights and complex designs, panel and time series declarations, and a frames system that keeps several datasets in memory at once so you can move variables between them without writing intermediate files.

The estimation set covers the standard ground and a long way past it: linear and generalised linear models, panel data estimators with fixed and random effects, instrumental variables, survival analysis, multilevel and mixed models, structural equation modelling, treatment effects and causal inference estimators, multiple imputation for missing data, time series with ARIMA and state space forms, and Bayesian estimation with a full MCMC engine.

Output is built for publication rather than for the screen. Graphs are fully specified objects with editable schemes, exportable to vector formats at print resolution, and tables can be assembled and exported directly into document and spreadsheet formats. Dynamic documents mix narrative and executed code so a paper regenerates from the analysis rather than being retyped when the data changes.

Installation Notes

• Set your working directory at the top of every do file rather than relying on where the application happens to start.
• Increase the memory allocation before loading a very large panel, expanding it partway through a session is slower than setting it once.
• Keep user written commands in a separate personal folder so a reinstall does not remove them.

Before You Start

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.
