Overview

TeamViewer is the remote access tool that works when the others do not, and the reason is the connection layer. It negotiates its way out through firewalls, routers and network address translation without anybody opening a port or configuring a route, which is why it became the default answer to helping somebody who is not in the room and does not know what a router is.

A session starts with an identifier and a temporary code read out over the phone, or with saved credentials for a machine you administer. Once connected, the remote desktop appears in a window with full keyboard and mouse control, clipboard sharing in both directions, and quality settings that trade resolution against responsiveness so a session over a poor connection stays usable rather than becoming a slideshow.

The support tooling around the session is what makes it a working tool rather than a toy. Files transfer in both directions through a two panel browser or by drag and drop onto the session window. Multiple monitors on the remote machine are detected and can be viewed individually or all at once. Sessions can be recorded to a file for documentation, a remote restart reconnects automatically including into safe mode, and a chat channel runs alongside the session for talking someone through what you are doing.

For machines you own rather than machines you are helping, unattended access installs a resident component with fixed credentials, so a server, a workshop machine or a home computer is reachable without anybody sitting at it. Wake on network support brings a sleeping machine up first, a device list keeps everything organised by group, and session permissions control exactly what a connecting party is allowed to do.

Installation Notes

• Use the run once mode on a machine you are only helping with today, it needs no installation and leaves nothing behind.
• Set a strong fixed password before enabling unattended access, that component is reachable whenever the machine is on.
• Turn the quality setting down before diagnosing a slow connection, a responsive low resolution session beats a sharp unusable one.

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.
