Overview

Telegram Desktop is a native client rather than a web page in a wrapper, and the difference is obvious the moment you open it. It launches in a second, uses a fraction of the memory of the browser based messengers, and stays responsive on an account with thousands of chats and years of history behind it.

The account model is the practical draw. Message history lives on the account rather than on a device, so a machine that has never been signed in before shows the entire archive within seconds of connecting, and a device that is lost takes nothing with it. Every client on the account stays in step: read state, drafts, pinned chats and folders all synchronise, so a message half typed on a phone is waiting in the box on the desktop.

File handling is where it separates itself from the alternatives. Single files up to two gigabytes move through a chat without compression, which means a video file, a design archive or a disk image goes to a colleague directly rather than through a file sharing service. Media is streamed rather than downloaded in full before it plays, and everything ever sent stays retrievable from the shared media view of each chat.

Beyond direct messaging there are groups running to hundreds of thousands of members with granular permissions and moderation, broadcast channels for one to many publishing, threaded discussion attached to channel posts, polls and quizzes, scheduled and silent messages, message editing and deletion on both sides, folders for organising a crowded chat list, and a bot interface that a great many tools and services are built on top of.

Installation Notes

  • Set a local cache limit in settings if disk space matters, the client will otherwise keep everything it has ever loaded.
  • Chat folders are worth setting up on day one if the account is busy, they are the difference between a usable list and a wall.
  • The portable build runs from removable storage if you prefer not to install anything on the machine.

Before You Start

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.

There is no archive password on this or any other entry in the library. If something you downloaded elsewhere claims to come from here and asks for one, it did not come from here. Nothing on this site is behind a survey, a shortener or a countdown either.

If the entry does not match what the page describes, say so on the contact page and include the version string from the release details table. Reports naming a specific version get checked first because the checker can reproduce them straight away.

Frequently Asked

Does it need a phone connected?

No. Once the desktop client is connected to the account it works entirely on its own, including when no other device is switched on.

What is the file size limit?

Two gigabytes per file, sent without compression, which is the reason a lot of people use it to move working files.

Where is history stored?

On the account, which is why a fresh install shows everything immediately. A local cache holds what you have recently opened.
